Back to School: Out of this World First Day Outfits

This is the last day of Back to School week here at Just-Joshin. I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing my kiddos’ outfits as much as I have enjoyed sharing them. I sew for my boys because I love doing it, and I know they love the special outfits I make for them. They have been super cooperative this week with multiple photoshoots, and only required minimal bribery. Next week they start back to preschool. This will be their second year of preschool, and they are both excited to go back. I decided to make special first day of preschool outfits, what with this being their last-ever first-day-of-preschool. (It’s a real thing. I am sure of it.) Next year: Kindergarten!

The t-shrits are a design I offer in my Etsy shop, and I made matching shorts for them. Since my boys are really into pockets, I chose the Castaway Cargo pants from Peekaboo Pattern Shop. (affiliate link.) I used this pattern before to make safari shorts and they were so cute. This pattern can be used for pants or shorts, and goes together really quickly, despite having 4 pockets. (There is an option for welt-pockets on the back too, which I did not add.) The waistband is stretchy knit casing over elastic so it is easy for little guys to dress themselves. They love the cargo pockets, of course. I left the button/snap option off so they can more easily access the pockets. I figure if losing things becomes an issue I can always add snaps later. I asked the boys which they would prefer for the pockets, blue flaps or the space fabric. I got one of each. They also chose the colors for their t-shirts, based on their favorite colors. They also like how their shorts are like Miss Frizzle from the Magic Schoolbus

Even though school doesn’t start until Wednesday, they begged to wear these outfits the rest of the day after we were done with photos, and even asked if they could wear them to bed. I guess they like them!

And now, off to school next week. I am sure I will miss them at least a little. I won’t know what to do with all the quiet around here, though. More sewing, I suspect.

Kids Clothes Week: Boys Board Shorts

The first project I finished up this Kids Clothes Week is this adorable outfit for the first day of preschool. This was made by request, the customer even picked out this fabric. (Which I LOVE!) I used the Long Beach Board Shorts pattern from Terra’s Treasures, which is a super easy pattern and looks so nice with the piping accent. I love the panel on the back to use two different fabrics on shorts. I skipped the drawstring option, instead went with regular elastic.

I love making custom shorts to go with embroidered tees. Especially for boys, it really makes for fun outfits.

One Kids Clothes Week project done!

Adult PJs are only available in the Red/Green combo. (Please see sizing charts below for both kids and adult sizing.)

I didn’t think so either until I saw these outrageously cute pajamas from my favorite blank-shirts supplier. They are available now for pre-sale and supply is limited. Giving Back

When I was researching our Disney World vacation last year, I happened upon a sub-group of the called Disboutique. Essentially a group of sewing enthusiasts who make amazing custom clothing and more. Most of it has a Disney vibe, since the love of the Mouse is what brought them all together in the first place. It is a great community feel, lots of sharing of projects (and frustrations) enabling alerts to sales on fabric and embroidery designs or advice and how-tos for newbies.

This group also has an amazing little initiative where they organize what they call “Big Gives” for kids who are going on Wish trips. They pick a kid to shower with gifts and then they organize everyone to give what they can for the wish kid, their family, sometimes more. This includes custom outfits, t-shirts, “pixie dust” gifts like stickers and gift cards. It is truly amazing to see this group of people come together to make these kids’ trips really special.

I have been fortunate enough to have participated in a few of these Big Gives, and while it does take time and effort, being able to help these kids is priceless.

I made these Finding Nemo shirts for two brothers going on a Make-a-wish cruise. The younger brother had been in and out of hospitals his whole life, even had a transplant. He was finally healthy enough to travel for the first time ever.

Recently I did shirts, shorts and dresses for a family who is going to Star Wars weekend at Disney World. The “wish kid” is 7, and a huge star wars fan. I made these Mickey/Star Wars shirts for him and his 4-year-old twin sisters who are also huge Star Wars fans. I made him cargo shorts to match, and the younger sisters each got Minnie Mouse dresses.

I loved making them and the family sent me amazing photos of the kids in their outfits, including them wearing them to school the next day over layers of long sleeves and sweatpants. Plus I got the best thank you note ever: a hand-drawn Star Wars scene which I hung in my sewing room.

I did these Thing 1 and Thing 2 shirts for another family, their request. They are going to Disney World and Universal next month. I love these so much I am adding them to my to-do list for my own “Things 1 and 2.”

And my most recent project was a beach towel for a Make-a-Wish cruise.

So on top of the many projects I have been doing for my Etsy shop, I  fit these projects in, because, how could I not? I know they mean the world to these kids. (I mean, seriously seeing those kids wearing their outfits on top of sweatpants was just about the best thing ever!) It takes time, sure, but totally worth it.

Under the Sea Custom Quilt

DSC 0001

This past week, Grandma was in town playing with the boys so I had lots of free time to sew. I finished quite a few unfinished projects and got all caught up with my etsy orders. I finished a quilt I had started months ago, sometime way back in the summer. When I posted a photo of it to my friends on Facebook, someone I have known since High School commented that she was in want of a baby gift, and loved the quilt. Unfortunately, upon checking in with the expectant parents, the colors and theme (Pink/Green/Brown with Owls.) was all wrong for their nursery. Their little girl’s room was to be done in blues and light greens, with an under-the-sea theme. My friend asked if I could do that, and I said of course I can!

I have loved this every step of the way, from picking out fun blue and green fabrics with a sea vibe, to seeing it all go together. There are a total of eight appliqué sea creatures and I just can’t pick a favorite, they are all so cute. The back is all the multi-dots like the binding, which bright and colorful and ties all the other colors together.

It is not often that I am sad to see my creations head off to the post office, but this one is definitely tough to say goodbye. This design gave me so many ideas, I can’t wait to do more quilts in different themes like trucks or animals or princesses. The possibilities are endless!

New Stuff in the Etsy Shop

Here are just a few examples of new designs I have added to my shop recently. I have had a lot of fun creating new designs and even more fun seeing them modeled by a ton of cuties. More in the pipeline, so stay tuned. Big thanks to all the families who let me borrow these adorable little models and to Loch and Key Photography for the amazing photos of all these cuties.

Love is in the Air

With Christmas in the rearview mirror and the New Year upon us, it is time to start thinking of all things love. I have been working to add some new cute Valentine designs to my shop, and just posted the first two today. With these, I have introduced personalization. I have been working with embroidery design software to put together cute designs and fonts to make these designs more personal. I have several other Valentine designs, as well as lots of other fun stuff in the pipeline.

Decking the Halls

Thanksgiving is behind us now, and I have started really concentrating on getting new things into my Etsy Store for Christmas. When I started the shop, I hoped to get more Twin Sets done, since I have a set of twins very dear to me. Many of my sons’ playmates are also twins, several are Boy/Girl twins, which are much harder to find coordinating outfits. Here are a few things I have come up with this week. More coming soon!

Quilts as cute as your baby

This is a baby quilt I made as a gift for a friend’s new baby girl. It wasn’t my first quilt, but it was the first one I added appliqué and I love how it turned out. I can see a lot of potential in dressing up quilts with appliqué, especially for babies and kids. I love picking fabrics for quilts and now I am having even more fun picking an appliqué design to go with the fabrics. So much fun!
