The Gifted School by Bruce Holsinger. The fictional town of Crystal, CO the kids aren’t all just above average, they’re incredibly gifted. Or so the parents all believe. When the school district announces a gifted magnet school in town, the parents collectively lose their minds, and possibly some friendships, maybe a few jobs. The story follows four families, all with kids heading into middle school, all of whom live a life of comfort and privilege. They embody parenting as a competitive sport, in all the worst ways. I wish it seemed unbelievable that adults would say and do the things these people do, but it’s really not. Lying, cheating, exploiting connections, bribery, you name it, none of it is too low to sink for these families in their pursuit of a spot in the gifted school for their kids. The characters are well-formed, not very likable, and completely believable. The story has some predictable spots and some twists, and sticks with you after the last page. Are people really this horrible to get their kids “ahead” in life? Without doubt. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I don’t know why I put off reading this book for so long. I love Rainbow Rowell have completely enjoyed all of her books, especially Fangirl, which is where this story originated. Simon and Baz were fictional characters that the main character in the fictional book Fangirl wrote about in her fan fiction. Which became its own world in Carry On. The book started out sort of slow and very reminiscent of Harry Potter, but switched gears and suddenly you’re not in Hogwarts anymore. I love the characters and the alternating point of view storytelling, friendship, attraction, awkwardness, adventure, and love. Things You Dave in a Fire by Katherine Center. I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish this book. I got within the last 100 pages and I just couldn't put it down. It was a pretty quick read and I really liked the characters and found Cassie to be very relatable. She's a "tomboy" firefighter, who is a natural hero, tough, smart, driven and one of the best in her department in Texas forced to leave the station she's always known and felt welcome, and move across the country to Massachusetts to care for her estranged mother. She ends up in a good-old-boys type station where the men are not particularly welcoming and think their station is no place for a "lady" fireman. There is a lot of great detail about the life of firefighters, especially from the perspective of a woman who isn't welcome by the men on her crew. There is a little will-they-won't-they attraction between Cassie and "The Rookie" who started at the same time she did, and is the one person who she feels like she can actually trust. I really enjoyed this book, Cassie's struggle to find acceptance in her work, which is so entwined with her identity she can't really separate herself from the job. Packing for Mars by Mary Roach. I love Mary Roach and her humorous and accessible science for non-scientists. This book has lots of quirky things you never read or hear about in regard to space travel (like lots of bodily functions that function differently in zero gravity for instance.) and it makes for a fascinating read. Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane. Families can be messy and complicated, and truly no one knows what battles others are fighting and what goes on behind closed doors. This book is not a light read, it’s complex and emotional and explores love, compassion, hatred, remorse, empathy, and forgiveness through the lives of two families, intertwined over the course of 40 years. What mistakes are forgivable and can live conquer all? The families are both profoundly impacted by mental illness and an unexpected tragedy that shapes their lives over the next few decades. This book is engrossing and the characters are believable, both likable and unlikeable, deeply flawed, well-meaning and messy. Unclaimed Baggage by Jen Doll. This is a fun figuring out who you are over summer vacation type YA novel with interesting and likable characters who work in an interesting summer job where they sort through unclaimed lost luggage for a resale shop. There is a little teen angst, rebellion, rivalry, social pressure and romance, plus a lot of great friendship. Plus parents who aren’t terrible, which isn’t always the case in YA.
