It’s been a while since I finished a quilt but I spent two days this week piecing together this for a friend who needs a little pick me up. Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon. I borrowed this one from the library after I listened to and enjoyed The Sun is Also a Star by the same author. This is a sweet story about a girl Madeline, who is stuck inside her entire life because she’s essentially allergic to everything and has a severely compromised immune system. She lives with her Mother the doctor and has a home nurse, visitors (of which there are few) must enter through an airlock and decontaminate. The book starts on her 18th birthday as she’s happily living in her literal bubble, but her world is turned on it’s head when a cute, interesting boy, Olly, moves in next door. He goes to considerable effort to get her attention and they begin a relationship (of sorts) via email and pantomime in their respective windows. She keeps the whole thing from her mother and it starts to impact their mother-daughter relationship. When something happens to Olly that drives Madeline out the front door onto the lawn, her mom finds out. She never knew how much she was missing the regular teenager stuff like having a crush on a neighbor boy and this starts a chain of events that change her life drastically. I read this entire book today because I was in bed most of the day with a sore throat and body aches. Fingers crossed I’ll feel better tomorrow. Anyway... Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. This is the August selection for my IRL book club, so not my usual pick but I enjoyed it. Lots of small-town, everybody knows your business, family drama, twists and turns and an unreliable narrator made this a solid story. Camille is a mediocre reporter for a newspaper in chicago who is sent to her tiny hometown in boot-heel southern Missouri to write about the mysterious murders of two young girls, proving you really can’t go home again. 4/5 stars ⭐️ #18readingchallenge #justjoshinreads #2018readingchallenge #goodreads #readersofinstagram #readersofig #booksofinstagram

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. This is a beautifully written book that examines family, secrets, sacrifices, belonging and parental pressure. The book tells the story of the Lee family, Chinese Father, White mother, mixed-race kids, in an area and era where they were the only family that looked like them and didn’t fit in. At the center of the story is Lydia, the middle child of 3, favorite to both parents, and dead on the first page. What follows is the varying degrees to which the family members struggle with this loss. Both parents have generally ignored the two other children most of their lives, and that doesn’t change much after she dies. Mom loses herself in a search of answers and Dad finds comfort in his young, attractive teaching assistant, leaving the remaining kids to cope on their own. The timeline jumps around to explain how Lydia became the favored child and what that pressure did to her mental health, her family dynamic, her relationships with her siblings. This book is an excellent description of how the secrets and regrets we hold can shape who we become and fracture a family. The bag I made myself yesterday to take to the Wizarding World of Woodstock event. I knew I needed a decent sized bag to carry water and Wands and whatever else my kids handed me while we explored. This fit the bill perfectly! I usually add little zipper pulls and this one is no exception, but I found this little owl yesterday and I knew I would be a wonderful addition to my bag. The bag is Pelican Tote from @bagstockdesigns and it’s a free pattern! The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. I listened to the audio book this week, it showed up in my suggestions on the Library app. I really enjoyed it. The characters are wonderful and the side stories are interesting. It’s a love story and a story of family and circumstance and human connection and science and poetry. Daniel and Natasha meet on her last day Before her family is deported and spend the day falling for each other through a scientific method and a series of events that just keep pushing them together. Improbable? Yes.
