I devoured this book in one day yesterday and kept waking up during the night thinking about it. Small Animals by Kim Brooks is part memoir and part sociological analysis. It’s an honest, well-researched look at how batshit crazy modern American parenting has become. The book starts when Kim Brooks decides it’s not worth the fight to get her son out of the car to run into Target for one thing so she leaves him in the car, locked, not too hot, happily occupied by a game on a tablet, for 5 minutes to grab headphones for a plane trip. He was fine and perfectly happy when she returned. Interspersed in the rest of the book are the two years following, when she gets home and finds someone had taken video of her son in the car and called the police. The bulk of this book is a mixture of interviews and case studies, conversations, and her own thoughts about the fear drives modern parenting: Judgement, avoidance of judgement, Irrational and improbable what-if scenarios, competition, social pressures, class and race. Brooks does the research and takes the time to uncover why parents, and mothers in particular, are overwhelmed, frenetic, unhappy, and forced to parent as a competitive sport. The writing is easy and friendly, and doesn’t read like a textbook. I felt like it was a conversation with a friend and found myself identifying with nearly every chapter, like it was an echo of my own feelings and conversations with other moms. I started a bunch of tote bags months ago and just now got to interfacing all the linings. I always underestimate how long things will take and then I spend 4 hours ironing interfacing. Finished this one up last night. Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge. Not a light read by any stretch. I’m making an effort to read more books by and about people of color and this is a good one. Unlike the title suggests, the author isn’t actually refusing to discuss race, she goes into great depth the history of racism in society as well as the misguided feelings that white people tend to have about race. She addresses feminism and intersectionality, how engrained racism is in everything from language, culture, education, and class. This book mainly focuses on Britain which, like the US, has a deep, historical, far-reaching social power structure which serves to keep people of color out of power. I’ll be thinking about this one for a while, it will be a long digestion. Little things I’ve never thought about before I will notice now. For instance, she refers to a white American who moved to Britain as “expat” but a person of color who did the same would be considered and “immigrant” which has a distinct negative implication. There were parts of the book that were slow and crammed a lot of historical details into a short, convoluted section, but I’m glad I stuck it out and read through.
